University of Maryland
SK&A provided full structural engineering services for this state of the
art new academic facility, which serves the university's Schools of
Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and dentistry. The 175,000 SF facility
boasts 900 study seats arranged in a variety of reference rooms,
individual carrels, group meeting rooms and computer stations.
The structure incorporates a number of distinctive architectural
elements, including a continuously ascending monumental staircase
that extends the full length and height of the building, a large cylindrical
entrance tower, a connectiving interior bridge and a curved concrete
wing-like roof. This project received an Excellence in Concrete Award
from the Maryland Chapter of the American Concrete Institute.
