SUPPORTING AFFORDABLE HOUSING INITIATIVES

SK&A offers financial support to the Jubilee Housing Organization's efforts to make a difference. Firm members also attended the 18th annual Jubilee Gala on May 6th, 2006. This annual event raises funds to support Jubilee's privately subsidized housing initiatives which offer decent and affordable housing options to the low income residents of Washington, DC.

CONNECTING WITH LOCAL YOUTH

SK&A engineers volunteered as mentors in the ACE mentoring program during the 2006-07 academic year at Wilson High School. The ACE mentoring program serves high school youth who want to explore careers in engineering, construction or architecture. Over the course of the year, the students developed an idea for and designed a new Community Center to be placed near their high school. The community center featured a library, game room, multi-purpose gymnasium and auditorium, as well as administrative offices. The students also included green/sustainable elements and LEED criteria in their design with the addition of a green roof, and orienting the building to allow for passive solar heating. The group was able to model their building design in 3D using architectural software, and gave an excellent presentation during the ACE presentation banquet at the end of May. Pictured below (from left to right) are SK&A engineers Jessica Marine and Chris McCune, and Wilson High students Caroline and Ben.
